Title: Companions
Author: grlgoddess
Characters: Ten/Donna, former Ten/Rose, mentions Martha
Rating: PG
Word Count: 680
Summary: The Doctor loses Rose (again) and Donna. A recollection of his recent companions and their lasting effects on him.
Disclaimer: Don't own it. Or gosh darn it, this scene would never have happened.
AN/Warnings: This is just outright depressing. I had to stop while writing some bits so I wouldn't cry. Damn Journey's End, being all tear-jerking.

doctor_donna. Prompt was "lost"
Dalig Ulv Stranden. This was the second time he was forced to leave her here, though it was the first time he had actually set foot on the cold beach. In a way, this time was more tragic than the last. The first time, it was against both of their wills that they ended up alone. Now, it was a decision he made. And she wasn't alone. He had given himself to her, a part of him at least, even though he knew that that wouldn't be enough. For either of them.
But it was also easier this time, for him to leave her on this cold and windy beach in another universe. He had already mourned the loss of her, and was far along the path to healing. He didn't love her any less, but in memory, he viewed that love in a different way. A way that was more similar to other companions that he had lost. She had helped him heal from the Time War, and he would forever be grateful to her for that, but that was all in his past now.
Donna had jump-started the process on that Christmas Day. She had reined him back from the edge, jolted him out of depression. She knew exactly what he needed, and refusing to join him that night was hard to take.
Martha had properly started the healing. She was brilliant, and could bring him back to living in the present. She helped forget, if only for a little bit, all the things he had lost. When she left, it was his fault. He had relied on her far too much, and in all the wrong ways. She still cared for him, though, forgave his wrongs against her, and he knew she could still be relied on.
Then, Donna found him again. She fitted with him perfectly. She knew what life would be like with him, the good and bad, and she still came. They wanted exactly the same things (usually), and neither of them were afraid to go after it. She was often loud and brash and completely unimpressed by all his Time Lord tricks. She was brilliant, absolutely brilliant, even though she never believed him when he told her. She was exactly what he needed in the universe and it took him far too long to find her.
He tried to focus on the pain that losing Rose caused him, because he knew that not to would be worse. He knew that if he stopped focusing on losing Rose again, losing her to a more-or-less happy life, he would have to focus on what came next. Focus on Donna, wonderful, brilliant, beautiful Donna, and how his Time Lord mind was slowly starting to tear her apart. Focus on what he would have to do to keep her safe. Focus on having to leave her absolutely. Leaving her in shambles.
They quietly snuck away as the other him whispered in Rose's ear, not turning back. He was silent as they piloted the Tardis back into their world, silent as Donna started to show the effects of the metacrisis. He saw the fear as she realised what he had to do to keep her safe, keep her alive. Despite her protests, the ones that shattered his hearts, he knew that a universe without Donna Noble would be far harder to bear than one where she didn't know him.
He saw her memories flicker past as he erased them, all the things they'd done, all the places they'd been. All the places they never would be.
She was a contrast to Rose in so many ways, but they shared one very important thing. He had never told either of them what his duplicate had whispered in Rose's ear, whether it was never could or never would didn't matter, he had never had those words slip from his lips.
As Donna slumped against him, her mind a blank slate, he hugged her tighter, hoping his words would sink in at some level, "I love you, Donna Noble. Always will."
