My first kinda shippy fic ever. Oh, and less crack than I usually come up with.

“What's this for?” Donna asked, looking at the stunning green jewel hanging from the light silver chain.

“Just cause,” the Doctor replied. His hands were in his pockets and he was swaying nervously from side to side. “Do you like it?”

“It's gorgeous!” she said “Where'd you get it?”

“Ohh, just this jeweler on this planet Dskyryght, half of its crust is coated in silver. Are you sure you like it?”

She slapped him lightly on the shoulder, “Of course I do dumbo, but I still don't get why...”

“Cause we're mates,” he said smiling.

She returned the smile, and gave him a hug.

He hugged her back, because he couldn't add why he really had gotten her the gift. How could he tell his best mate that it wasn't enough? How could he let her know that he didn't want to be just mates anymore? That he wanted more?

He couldn't.

“So, where to next?” he asked.

Yep, he should just get up the nerve and tell her. It's not like she won't reciprocate his feelings. But our Doctor is a bit on the clueless side sometimes.
